Miniature Schnauzers were originally bred to be rodent-catchers. Originating in Germany in the late 1800s, they were bred to keep farms and households pest-free, quickly and effectively catching mice, rats, and other small rodents.
They were bred from several larger German canine breeds, such as the Standard Schnauzer, the Poodle, and the Affenpinscher. Miniature Schnauzers have maintained many of their ratting traits, including their intense focus and loyalty.
