How Many Greyhound Tracks Are Still Open

Greyhound racing has been a popular sport in the United States since the early 1900s. Unfortunately, the number of greyhound tracks in the United States has decreased significantly in recent years, due to increased competition from other sports betting options and tough regulations. According to the American Greyhound Track Operators Association (AGTOA), there were nearly 68 greyhound tracks in operation as of 2019, as compared to over 100 in 1990.

Despite the decline, greyhound tracks remain in operation in many states throughout the country, including Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Massachusetts. In Florida, greyhound racing is a staple of the state’s gambling industry, and there are currently 19 racetracks still in operation. These tracks are supported by gambling revenue from the state’s casinos, which has helped to keep the tradition alive.

In addition, some smaller tracks are still open in certain states, such as the Valley Race Park in Harlingen, Texas. The Valley Race Park, which is one of the oldest greyhound tracks in the country, has been operating since the 1940s and is still open to the public.

Along with the traditional greyhound tracks, there are also simulcast wagering tracks in some states. Simulcast wagering is a form of betting that allows bettors to wager on live races from other tracks around the country. Currently, there are 13 simulcast tracks in operation in the United States, including Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas.

Although the number of greyhound tracks has decreased significantly over the past few decades, those that remain in operation continue to provide a unique and exciting experience for those who enjoy the sport. While the traditional greyhound tracks may not be as popular as they once were, they still offer a chance to experience the thrill of live greyhound racing. For those looking to experience the excitement and thrill of greyhound racing, there are still many opportunities to do so.
